[Vietnam] The top auto market share in Hanoi is KIA. Where do luxury car owners live?
Intage Vietnam's auto panel (about 8,000 samples) analyzed the Vietnamese auto market in May 2019.
First of all, the top share by manufacturer is KIA (31%), which is Korean-owned, followed by TOYOTA (26%), Ford (12%), and MAZDA (8%). Since almost 90% of the car owners live in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, we conducted further analysis focusing on these two cities.
In Ho Chi Minh City, the market share by manufacturer is KIA (27%), TOYOTA (26%), Ford (12%), and MAZDA (9%), while in Hanoi, KIA has a relatively high share of 31%, followed by TOYOTA (28%), Ford (10%), and MAZDA (10%). In terms of the age of car owners, 39 years old tops the list for Vietnam as a whole, followed by 36, 37, and 45 years old. In Ho Chi Minh City, the top age group is 39, followed by 36 and 37, while Hanoi is slightly younger at 34, 36 and 39. This may be due to the large number of inexpensive KIA users.
A detailed analysis focusing on the districts of each city shows that in Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Thanh, Go Vap, and Thu Duc have the most owners, in that order. Focusing on luxury cars, BMW tends to be higher in Binh Thanh and Dist. 2, Mercedes-Benz in Dist. 7 and Binh Thanh, and LEXUS in Binh Thanh and Dist. 7. In Dist. 2 and 7, which are somewhat far from the city center and where the wealthy live, there are many people who own luxury cars, while in Go Vap and Thu Duc, where young couples are increasingly living, the cars are mainly entry-level models, and overall there are many car owners in these areas.
The areas with the most car owners in Hanoi are Hai Ba Trung and Hoang Mai, in that order. The most popular luxury cars are BMW in Hai Ba Trung and Dong Da, Mercedes-Benz also in Hai Ba Trung and Dong Da, and LEXUS in Hai Ba Trung and Hoan Kiem. Unlike Ho Chi Minh City, the wealthy are mostly located in the city center, and so are the owners of luxury cars.
