Virtual home tour Cambodia/Vietnam Part 2 (daily life, food, cleaning, beauty, transport)

Cambodia is located in the southern part of the Indochina Peninsula in South-East Asia. Although currently classified as a Lower-middle income country, its GDP growth has been remarkable and the government has set a target of becoming an Upper-middle income country by 2030. This is at the same level as Vietnam, another South East Asian country, so it may be useful to know what Vietnam is doing now in order to predict what Cambodia will be like in seven years' time.

everyday life

This section introduces the daily routines and values of people living in Cambodia.

How they spend their day.

Cambodian families lead a simple life, with both working and waking up early. Husbands are mainly responsible for hanging and folding laundry, washing dishes after meals and taking children to and from school.

Lunch is often eaten out, and the family tends to eat self-cooked meals together in the morning and evening. Although they do not have the idea of relying on appliances and tools to shorten their time, they sometimes request a commuting maid to reduce the burden of household chores.

Let's take a look at a day in the life of a woman in a working family in the capital city of Phnom Penh.

On weekdays when I have to work, I get up at 6:15 am and by 7:30 am when I have to leave for work, I have to prepare myself, breakfast, get ready for work and take care of my children. After leaving work at 5:30pm, I spend my time preparing dinner, doing laundry, cleaning and showering the children.

Meals

Cambodian food is mostly traditional Khmer cuisine, and Western and Japanese food is not widely available. Food, mainly fresh food, is bought at a wet market near my house. As the food does not last long, frequent shopping trips are necessary and many people find the hassle burdensome.

Examples of home-cooked food.

Breakfast (image left) is grilled mackerel, stir-fried pork and white rice. Dinner (image right) is steamed chicken, vegetables and white rice. The basic diet consists of white rice, stir-fried vegetables and meat, and soup, with salty side dishes seasoned with salt or fish sauce and a lot of rice.

Floors are cleaned with a broom or mop and bathrooms with a brush. The broom used to sweep the floor is also used to sweep the bathroom floor. Some households do not use detergents and vacuum cleaners are not widespread.
Although bacteria is a concern, cleaning seems to be done with the aim of first removing visible dirt and making the home more comfortable. If awareness of invisible things such as germs, odours and air changes, this may influence cleaning methods such as disinfection and sterilisation and the use of different cleaning tools.

Although washing machines have a 70% penetration rate (*), a certain number of households wash their clothes by hand using washing tubs. Many households choose powder detergents based on their cleaning power and fragrance, and some also use fabric softeners.

Beauty

There does not seem to be much interest in make-up (base and point make-up). However, white skin is considered beautiful and many women use sun protection due to the strong UV rays.

Mobility

Cambodia is a motorbike-obsessed country, with each person owning a motorbike, and motorbikes are a common means of transport for the general population. On the other hand, public transport, such as buses, is not widely used as it is not easy to use and is perceived to be used by people with low incomes. Around 50%(*) of households also have a car, which they use for family outings. Most are used cars, including many Japanese brands.
Bikes are often parked in the living room, as in the house shown in the virtual home tour, and in some houses the car is also kept indoors.
