Population ratio by language _Malaysia
More than half of the population is of Malay descent, and many of them speak Malay, the official language, as their mother tongue.
English, a semi-official language, is also widely used.
Some Chinese, who make up about 20% of the population, speak Cantonese, Fujianese, and other regional languages as their mother tongue, but Mandarin Chinese is the language of schooling, so it is the common language for many people.
