インド連邦政府は、ヒンディ語を連邦公用語、英語を準公用語として定めている。 全土ではヒンディ語を母語として話す人が約4割と最も多いが、他にベンガル語（西ベンガル州など）、テルグ語（アーンドラ・プラデーシュ州、テランガーナ州など）等、多くの言語が話される。
