The federal government of India has designated Hindi as the official language of the Union and English as a semi-official language.
Hindi is spoken by the largest number of people in the country (about 40%) as their mother tongue, but many other languages are also spoken, such as Bengali (West Bengal, etc.) and Telugu (Ayodhya Pradesh, Telangana, etc.).
