Women's Taxi Service Increasing in Numbers Regardless of Time
Women-only taxi services driven by female drivers have been launched in Delhi and other urban areas, with an increasing number of users at all hours from early morning to late night.Sakha cabs, which launched on January 10, 2020, mainly at the Delhi International Airport, are driving, self-defense and customer service communication and is driven by a female driver who has received about eight months of English conversation training and averages 30 to 40 rides a day. There is also a panic button in the car to make the ride more comfortable for female customers.
More expensive than Uber and Ola — yet people still want to use it.
Unlike Uber or Ola, Sakha Cabs is closer to a chartered car service that must be booked in advance via its website, rather than a ride-hailing service where users enter a destination and hail a taxi on demand. For a sedan, the fare from central Delhi to the airport costs around 250–300 INR (approximately ¥400–480) with Uber or Ola, whereas Sakha Cabs operates on a 4-hour charter basis and costs 880 INR (approximately ¥1,400).
Compared with Uber and Ola, Sakha Cabs is more expensive, has fewer vehicles, and can sometimes be difficult to book, making it less convenient in practice. However, many women still choose to use the service because taxis driven by women significantly reduce the risk of encountering sexual crime, harassment, or gender discrimination.
As women’s participation in the workforce continues to increase in urban areas and the country as a whole aims to build a more women-friendly society, services designed specifically for women like this are likely to continue expanding.
