[Vietnam] Water heater trends in the bathroom – preferences differ between the south and the north since it depends on climates

While Ho Chi Minh City in the south has a year-round tropical climate, Hanoi has four seasons and winters are quite cold. This difference in climate is also evident in the facilities in the bathrooms.

According to the results of the 2019 Population and Housing Census of Vietnam's General Department of Statistics, most households in Hanoi have water heaters or hot water heaters in the bathroom at 84.0%, compared to 39.9% in Ho Chi Minh City. One of the reasons for this is that in the northern part of the country, there are "winters" when the minimum temperature falls below 10°C (50°F) and it gets quite cold in the bathrooms.

Looking at the difference in preference between instantaneous water heaters and water heaters, many households in Ho Chi Minh City choose instantaneous water heaters because the temperature of tap water is high and electricity costs are not so high even with water heaters, and because they do not take up much space. On the other hand, Hanoi often uses water heaters because the water temperature drops in winter and water heaters cost more for electricity.

Another trend in households with newborns is to install electric bathroom heaters. Although it is almost impossible to find households with a device like the bathroom dryer in Japan, the market potential for bathroom dryers is high, especially in the northern part of the country, where humidity is high all year round and laundry does not dry well.

The market potential for hot-water washing toilets is also promising. The main body of Vietnamese toilets is almost the same as the Western-style type used in Japan, but most of them are equipped only with a "manual water shower. The custom of washing one's buttocks and the cold season, especially in the northern and central regions of the country, are expected to increase the demand for hot-water washing toilets, even though they are expensive.
