This year’s cherry blossom season saw an estimated number of foreign visitors in April comparable to April 2019, before the outbreak of COVID-19, when arrivals reached 2.9 million. While this sharp increase in inbound travelers revitalized Japan’s tourism sector and related industries, it also became a double-edged sword, leading to overcrowding at popular destinations and misunderstandings between local residents and tourists.
