Among these, drinks known as “chewable drinks” (jūzhé xì) are particularly popular, especially among young people. These are “drinks you chew” that incorporate ingredients with distinct textures, such as tapioca pearls, rice cakes, pudding, and agar. In Taiwan, the term “QQ” (pronounced “kyu-kyu”) is used to describe this chewy, bouncy texture.

In addition to the convenience of being able to operate a smartphone while drinking with one hand, they are also substantial enough to serve as a meal replacement in many cases. They are popular because they allow people to “eat” and “drink” at the same time amid their busy daily lives.

4. Reinterpreting “Taiwanese Identity” Through the Evolution of Chewing Culture

These “chewable drinks” have continued to evolve in recent years. What sets them apart is that they go beyond simply adding texture; they incorporate traditional Taiwanese cuisine and culture to create new value.

The signature product of the popular drink chain “Yi Mu Ri”—“Dai Wan Nai Cha”—is a prime example of this trend. It features a milk tea infused with the scent of bamboo, to which small pieces of the rice cake portion from the traditional Taiwanese dish “Cao Zi Guo” are added.

“Daiwan” is a Taiwanese word meaning “Taiwan,” and the drink itself is designed to embody the essence of Taiwan. By incorporating traditional food into a chewy drink, it successfully highlights both novelty and local character, becoming a major topic of conversation on social media.

In addition, “Wanpo Daoyu Hongcha,” a popular drink chain among young people, launched a limited-edition product called “Rice Mochi Taro Paste Milk Tea” in November 2025. This drink combines taro paste with soft mochi, layering multiple textures within the milk tea.

This product became a hot topic, including for its visual appeal, as a trend spread among young people to use chopsticks instead of a straw to lift the mochi and film its stretchy movement to post on social media.

What these examples have in common is that, in addition to blending “drinking” and “eating,” they integrate traditional foods, textures, and visual experiences. The design—which delivers multiple values simultaneously in a single cup and provides instant gratification—is strongly tied to the values of Taiwanese people, who prioritize efficiency and speed.
