The report series of "by Statistical Data" series is a thematic series of reports on basic statistical data related to lifestyle (food, housing, mobility, etc.) in various countries. In "Food Consumption in China", we present an overview of food consumption in China and its characteristics by region, using publicly available data from the Chinese government.

Summary

1. Income & Expenditures
Over the past 5 years, the income and expenditure of the Chinese resident population have been on the rise. At the same time, there is a large disparity between urban and rural areas. For urban areas, among the expenditures, expenditure for food is the largest at nearly 30%. Expenditure is also under an increasing trend over the years.


2. Dietary Components & Nutrition Intake
While the average height and weight are increasing, the overweight and obesity rates are also on the rise, revealing health issues. The current diet is unbalanced, with an excess of carbohydrates and sodium, while lacking in fruits and vegetables.


3. Consumption per Person by Category
(1)Compared to Japan, the diet in China is more centred on grains, with consumption of fruits and vegetables also being higher.
(2)Pork is the mainly consumed meat, but its consumption has been declining in recent years. Beef consumption is increasing slightly,  nonetheless it has not reached the same level as in Japan.
(3)Consumption of fishery products, eggs, milk and dairy products is also increasing, though still lower than in Japan.
(4)Consumption of cooking oil and sugar as a source of energy has remained stable in recent years. 


4. Regional Characteristics of Food Consumption
(1) GDP per capita is negatively correlated with the consumption of staple foods and positively correlated with the consumption of milk and dairy products.
(2) Consumption of fruits and vegetables, fishery products and eggs may be related to the region of origin.
(3) Geographical and ethnic factors are strongly related to meat consumption.
(4) Cooking oil and sugar consumption tend to be influenced by climate and the agricultural products of the region.
