Description

The report series of "by Statistical Data" series is a thematic series of reports on basic statistical data related to lifestyle (food, housing, mobility, etc.) in various countries. In "Housing in China", we present an overview of house consumption in China and its characteristics by region, using publicly available data from the Chinese government.

Summary

1. Household composition
(1) The total number of households is increasing, meanwhile the urban population have exceeded the rural population in 2020 due to the effect of urbanization.
(2) The average number of people per household is larger than in Japan. Meanwhile, single-person households account for about 1/4 of all households, and the proportion of single-generation households is about half.
(3) Overall, the closer an area is to the coast, the smaller household size get and the more proportion of single-person households increase.

2. Housing Ownership
(1) China has a household registration system, and local policies regarding the acquisition of household registration are also related to population movement.
(2) The authorities are promoting multiple policies against the backdrop of a real estate bubble, population problems in large cities, and disparities between urban and rural areas,.
(3) Real estate prices have skyrocketed, and housing expenditures account for a high percentage of the total expenditure.
(4) The area per housing unit is gradually increasing, while at the same time, there is a preference for using spacious housing space.
(5) More than half of the houses are "multi-story house", and most of them are steel-framed or reinforced concrete structures.
(6) There is a disparity between the period of construction rush in China and that in Japan. New constructions are preferred for purchase.

3. Ownership of durable goods
(1) Urban households in China have a complete set of basic household appliances such as washing machines, refrigerators, and air conditioners.
(2) The rate of microwave oven ownership is only 0.6/household in 2021. One of the reasons for this decline in demand for microwave ovens may be the spread of delivery service.
(3) In mobility, while car ownership rate in Japan has been flat for the past several years, in China it has been increasing year by year.
(4) Electric motorcycles are available at low prices, with the rate of ownership being more than three times higher than that of motorcycles.
(5) The average ownership rate of cell phones, including smartphones, is high and exceeds that of Japan in all provinces.
(6) On the other hand, the average ownership rate of PCs and cameras is declining as some of their functions are being replaced by smartphones.
