In "Housing in the United States", we present an overview of house consumption in the United States and its characteristics by region, using publicly available data from the US government.

Summary

Household Structure and Population Flows
・The the West Coast and states bordering  and Mexico, which has large population of Hispanic, tend to have higher average household size.
・The main factors of population flow are job opportunities and ease of living.
・Permanent residence is not popular in the US, and people generally change their place of residence at different stages of their lives.
・Compared to the national average, people in New York tend to move their house to save on housing costs, and Californians tend to move in order to reduce commuting time.


Housing Ownership
・The proportion of expenditures for housing is higher than in Japan, but electricity, water, and gas rates are lower.
・Real estate asset values are rising, and due to low interest rates until 2021, people tend to own their house rather than rent.
・Peopel in the US have a sense of independence and tend to buy entry-level homes at low prices from a young age.
・Compared to Tokyo, New York and California have larger living space and more rooms per unit.
・The majority of homes owned are detached houses, and more of them are older than 40 years.


Durable Goods Ownership
・The penetration rate of basic home appliances such as refrigerators and air conditioners is high.
・The ownership rate of dishwashers is higher than in Japan due to the large kitchen space.
・The ownership rate of smartphones is higher than that of PCs, indicating a shift in devices to smartphones.
・Car ownership is high in the US, but is lower than average in New York due to its well-developed public transportation system.
・EV charging facilities and EVs have been on the rise in recent years. Especially in California, where the ZEV policy is being strongly promoted, the penetration rate is higher than the national average.
