[Vietnam] Growing Health Awareness and Changes in the Living Environment Make Home Vegetable Gardening Popular in Urban Areas
Concerns about food safety and security have drawn attention to home vegetable gardens
The number of people starting vegetable gardens on their balconies or on the rooftops of office buildings, especially in Ho Chi Minh City, is increasing, especially in urban areas. In Vietnamese cuisine, fresh vegetables are consumed with every meal. The most popular vegetables for home gardening are those that are often eaten, such as mint, Asian basil and other aromatic vegetables, as well as small tomatoes and cucumbers, which are easy to grow.
One of the reasons behind this home gardening boom is the growing concern about food safety and security in Vietnam. In recent years, we have seen and heard many news reports about imported fruits and vegetables contaminated with pesticides and chemicals, and the use of preservatives and coloring agents in domestically produced meat and fish. In Vietnam, where the culture of eating out is deeply rooted, there is a growing number of health-conscious people who purchase foodstuffs that have been certified as low in pesticides and high in safety, because they cannot shake off their concerns about the ingredients used in restaurants and cafeterias.
In recent years, Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries have been experiencing increasing urbanization. According to data from the World Bank, the urban population ratio in Vietnam will account for 36.6% of the total population in 2019. Although the figure is not as high as that of Japan and Western countries (80-90%), it is 2% higher than the figure for 2018, and the rate of increase is the highest among Asian countries along with China.
