オーストラリアの国民性を語るときに欠かせないキーワードのひとつが「Mateship(マイトシップ)」である。英語で仲間を意味する「メイト(mate)」だが、オーストラリアでは「マイト」と発音されることが多い。この言葉には、単なる友情よりも深く、人や自然との共存を前提とした社会の「暗黙の了解」のような精神が込められている。もともとマイトシップとは、19世紀の植民地時代、厳しい自然環境や戦場で互いに支え合った経験から生まれた言葉で、困ったときは力を貸し合い、自然や社会の中でお互いを思いやる精神を指す。直訳すると「仲間意識」だが、単なる友情というよりも、より深く、おおらかなニュアンスで捉えられている。このマイトシップは、人と人との関係にとどまらず、「人と自然」との関係にも深く根を下ろしている。とりわけ「海との共存」は、オーストラリアの暮らしの根幹にある。サーフィンやダイビングを楽しみながら、美しい海を守ることにも積極的に関わろうとする姿勢は、まさにマイトシップの延長と言えるだろう。
